PEARL

Its Creation Story is as Fantastical As Its Lore

There are lots of stories that have been told about the formation of pearls. Middle Eastern ancients believed them to be teardrops fallen from heaven; Chinese history recounts their origin from the brains of dragons; Christopher Columbus believed pearls were formed from dew drops. In reality, the process of a pearl’s formation is just as remarkable - wherein an oyster or mussel becomes irritated by a small foreign object, secreting a substance that enwrapps it, forming the gorgeous pearl as a result.

Pearl Culturing Has Strong Ties To Environmentalism

Those who grow saltwater pearls know that the health of the water they grow in is a critical component to their success. Healthy pearls thrive in environments that are remote, natural habitats; rich in nutrients; and distanced from the effects of civilization and pollution. For this reason, some of the strongest voices for environmentalism are those who culture saltwater pearls. The benefit is twofold: beautiful pearls and clean waters.

It Carries Significant Meaning

With their pristine milky white appearance, pearls have long been known to represent purity, humility, and innocence. Pearls have also been assigned a plethora of attributes, from bringing prosperity and long life, to alleviating indigestion and hemorrhages. Physicians of past years even prescribed pearl powder to improve eyesight and ease anxiety and depression.

La Peregrina

Discovered over 5,000 years ago, this famous pearl was passed around between kings and queens of many countries, earning its name meaning “the wanderer.” In the 1960s, La Peregrina found its way into the hands of Elizabeth Taylor - given to her as a gift by Richard Burton, who purchased it for $37K. Its size and shape are remarkable, and it is known as the most perfect pearl in the world. It was last purchased by an anonymous buyer for $11 million.

ALEXANDRITE

Red Light, Green Light

Most notably, alexandrite is known for being composed of mineral that changes colors in different lighting. In natural daytime or fluorescent light, it reads as a greenish blue teal color, while in incandescent light, it shifts dramatically to an intense reddish purple. The tagline, "Ruby by Day, Emerald by Night," is used to describe the astounding color change.

Russian Significance

Large deposits of alexandrite were found originally in Russia, and were said to be discovered on the birthdate of Alexander II, after whom the gem was named. Because its colors reflect the signature colors of Imperial Russia, the stone became a lasting symbol of good prophecy and good fortune for the country.

It Holds Its Own In Comparison to Pearl

There’s no doubting the popularity of pearls. However, alexandrite carries its own significant allure; because fine-quality alexandrite is quite rare, it is one of the most expensive and coveted of the gems. Many choosing a stone to celebrate the June birth month will choose Alexandrite over pearl because it is much more durable and can create a cohesive look alongside other gemstones in a Mother’s ring, for example. Lastly, alexandrite is said to promote compassion, serenity, and benevolence. Many celebrate it for its powers of giving strength to the meek and bringing loved ones close together.
