It’s impossible to be in the world of jewelry without paying homage to the humble yet magnificent structure of the chain. This simple design has been used since ancient times and yet remains an integral part of modern jewelry. Aside from its delicate and classic appearance, the chain formation is highly functional and intentional in its design.
A chain is simply a series of links or rings, connected or fitted together. You may conjure a classic image when you hear the word “chain,” but there are actually over a dozen kinds of commonly used chains in jewelry pieces. At their core, they all offer ultimate flexibility as well as strength - the ideal combination when considering the structure of daily jewelry.
The chains in our collection are offered in both the Cribstone design and a simple paperclip link. Both are made entirely by hand, giving them a unique and crafted feel that stands out from the mass produced selections widely available. Though we do carry some gold and oxidized silver pieces in stock at most times, many clients prefer to special order their own piece to have total customization over the material selections and length.
On the note of length, our customers typically choose to customize 16.5” or 36” to make their preferred style; these are ideal lengths for layering, which is a current popular style for chain necklaces. Where chain previously was thought of as strictly a way to hold a pendant, the chain itself is now being recognized as a beautiful statement on its own.
Chains are not just for necklaces, they are beautiful statement pieces worn as bracelets as well. Our Rolling Cribstone Link bracelet is a unique twist on the traditional chain, and feels great on the wrist for all activities. During the summer months, chain anklets rise in popularity, typically with a smaller scale link for ease of movement.
While jewelry design has its fair share of innovation, there are some classics that will remain as staples in the industry. Chains will forever be a part of the world of jewelry, and we enjoy the opportunity they allow us to continually reinvent and reimagine them.
